AIR POLLUTION is KILLING ME!

Friends, the annual pollution tamasha is on! It begins every year with Diwali, goes on till about the end of December. We North Indians breathe in highly polluted air especially during winters, and, then we forget about the problem, not realizing how it is taking a toll on our health in the long run.

Journalists and scientists make impressive graphs to compare the annual air quality(AQ) data, display the AQ on screens at various locations, to alarm/ create awareness in the public.

India’s air is so polluted, it is reducing our life expectancy by 3.2 years. We try to overcome the problem by purifying the air in our homes and at our workplaces. Air purifiers are an essential gadget now, displayed proudly as a status symbol, and are the hot topic of conversation.

All dictates’ are for us, the public….

*Don’t burst crackers on Diwali….you are causing pollution!

*Don’t drive to work…vehicular emissions are bad!                                                                                                         *Farmers, don’t burn farm waste…we are choking!

*Close down the factories/Industries…they pollute our air!

*Stop all construction work…we are breathless!

BUT THE GDP MUST KEEP INCREASING

CAN ANYONE TELL US—-HOW????

I would like to know what is our Govt. doing?

    a) Is there any long-term plan in place? Like the creation of green belts with appropriate trees? Reduction of polluting industry?                       Electric vehicles?                                    Proper waste disposal?

b)Forest fires are rising rapidly, partly due to climate change, partly in the name of development, and partly for localized personal gains.

c)This year with elections in sight, stubble burning has created only 4-7% of air pollution, last year the figure was 40%. Obviously, our environmentalists, pollution control agencies, and politicians are trying to appease the vote bank.

 d) In our country 60% of total electricity generation is by coal-based thermal power plants, any plan to shift from this highly polluting energy source??

What can we do to combat pollution?

Friends, we must realize that most of our activities cause pollution of some kind or the other; only the plants and the trees are our saviors, they are the natural environment cleansers.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil that gives us food, if we pollute these we will have to pay the price with our health.                 We must protect our environment!

I pledge to contribute to this war against pollution—

*I will use the car/two-wheeler only when necessary, I will walk/ cycle to nearby places.

*I will ensure that there is no water wastage in my home, no leaking taps, I will use water optimally.

*No extra lights/fans will keep running in my house and all-electric gadgets will remain disconnected when not in use.

*I will use minimum plastic and will not throw it around mindlessly.

*I will ensure proper waste disposal, also I will try to compost my kitchen waste.

*I will grow plants in my garden/balcony and I pledge to adopt and take care of one tree in my neighborhood.

Together we will win back our BLUE SKY, our CLEAN RIVERS/WATER BODIES, and our FERTILE LAND!
